The concept of Sadaqah Jariyah — ongoing charity — is one of the most beautiful doctrines in Islamic ethics. Unlike a one-time donation, Sadaqah Jariyah keeps giving: its reward accumulates for the donor continuously, even after death, as long as people benefit from it. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explicitly identified several forms of Sadaqah Jariyah in the hadith of Ibn Majah (242), and among them, he named water he caused to flow (مَاءً أَجْرَاهُ).
