Umrah Badal — Proxy Umrah Performed by Certified Scholars in Makkah
Every Muslim holds a sacred wish — to walk the ground of Makkah, to circle the Kaaba, and to stand before the House of Allah in complete devotion. But illness, age, disability, and death can make that wish impossible to fulfil in person. Islam, in its infinite mercy, has provided a solution: Umrah Badal. If someone you love could not make that journey — or can no longer make it — you can send the reward of Umrah directly to them through a trusted, scholar-led proxy Umrah service performed right in the heart of the Holy Land.
At Badal Umrah, our mission is simple: to help Muslims worldwide fulfil this sacred duty with full Shariah compliance, complete transparency, and the deep spiritual sincerity this act deserves. Every Umrah Badal we perform is carried out by certified Islamic scholars residing in Makkah — not travel agents, not general workers — so you can trust that the worship reaching your loved one is authentic, valid, and accepted.
What Is Umrah Badal? A Clear Islamic Definition
Umrah Badal — also referred to as Badal Umrah, proxy Umrah, or in some communities as Omra Badal — is the Islamic practice of deputising a qualified Muslim to perform Umrah on behalf of another person who is permanently unable to do so themselves. In Arabic, “Badal” means substitute or replacement, and in the language of Islamic Fiqh, this practice is known as Al-Niyabah fi al-Umrah — deputyship in Umrah.
When a scholar performs Umrah Badal, they dedicate the full Niyyah (intention) to the person being represented from the very moment they enter Ihram. According to the scholars of all four major madhabs, the complete spiritual reward (Ajr) of that Umrah is recorded entirely for the soul of the intended person — as if they had personally performed every step themselves. For the deceased, this becomes one of the most powerful forms of Sadaqah Jariyah — an ongoing gift of worship that continues to benefit them after death.

Is Umrah Badal Permissible in Islam? The Shariah Evidence
Before booking any proxy Umrah service, every sincere Muslim should understand the Islamic ruling behind it. The answer is unambiguous: Umrah Badal is fully permissible, and the evidence is drawn from the most authentic sources in the Sunnah.
In Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 1513 (external link), a companion came to the Prophet ï·º and said: “My father is an old man who cannot perform Hajj or Umrah, nor can he travel.” The Prophet ï·º replied: “Perform Hajj and Umrah on behalf of your father.” Islamic scholars across all four madhabs — Hanafi, Shafi’i, Hanbali, and Maliki — have unanimously confirmed this applies to Umrah on behalf of the deceased, the elderly, and the permanently ill.
A further narration in Sunan an-Nasa’i Hadith 2621 Â records the same permission being extended to Umrah specifically, with scholars applying it by direct analogy (Qiyas) to proxy Umrah for deceased individuals and chronically ill Muslims.
The Standing Committee for Islamic Research and Ifta — the Lajnah al-Daimah — has also issued a written ruling confirming: “There is nothing wrong with giving money to someone to perform Umrah on behalf of one who is alive but unable to do Umrah himself.” Read the full fatwa at IslamQA Fatwa 142234
One essential condition agreed upon by all four madhabs is that the scholar performing the Umrah Badal must have already completed their own personal Umrah before undertaking it on behalf of another. Every certified scholar at Badal Umrah has fulfilled this condition.

Who Is Umrah Badal For?
Muslims Who Have Passed Away Without Performing Umrah
Performing Umrah on behalf of a deceased loved one is one of the most spiritually powerful acts a family member can carry out. For the deceased, there is no requirement for prior consent — your sincere intention and the correct Niyyah made by our scholar at the start of Ihram is entirely sufficient.

Elderly Parents and Relatives Unable to Travel
If your parent or elderly relative has reached a stage where travel is genuinely impossible due to age or frailty, Umrah Badal allows you to honour their wish and send the reward of the journey to them. This is fully established in the Sunnah and confirmed by all four madhabs.

Individuals with Chronic Illness or Permanent Disability
For Muslims living with a terminal or permanent illness, or a physical disability that makes the journey to Makkah impossible, proxy Umrah provides a Shariah-compliant path. The inability must be permanent — temporary illness does not qualify.
Anyone Wishing to Gift the Reward of Umrah to a Loved One
Many Muslims choose to perform Umrah on behalf of deceased parents as a voluntary spiritual gift — not out of obligation but out of love. Umrah Badal can be performed multiple times for the same person, whether living or deceased.
The Five Essential Conditions for a Valid Umrah Badal
For your proxy Umrah to be valid and accepted in accordance with Shariah, all five of the following conditions must be met. Our entire service is built around these requirements:
The scholar performing the Umrah Badal must be a Muslim, of sound mind, and an adult. They must have already completed their own Umrah before performing it for another — this is agreed upon by all four madhabs. The full Niyyah must be dedicated solely to the represented person from the moment of entering Ihram. Every obligatory ritual — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Halq or Taqsir — must be completed correctly and in full. If the represented person is still living, their explicit permission is required. For the deceased, the sincere intention of the person arranging the Umrah Badal is sufficient. The inability must be genuine, permanent, and established — not temporary or circumstantial.

Umrah Badal vs Hajj Badal — What Is the Difference?
Many Muslims ask about the difference between Umrah Badal and Hajj Badal. Both are forms of proxy pilgrimage rooted in the same Sunnah evidence, but they carry different conditions and rulings.
Hajj Badal refers to performing the obligatory Hajj on behalf of another and carries stricter scholarly conditions — including the requirement that the person performing it must have already completed their own obligatory Hajj. Umrah Badal follows the same core Shariah principles but applies to the lesser pilgrimage and can be performed multiple times for the same individual.

Frequently Asked Questions About Umrah Badal and Proxy Umrah

Can Umrah Badal be performed more than once for the same person? Yes. Unlike Hajj Badal, Umrah Badal can be performed multiple times for the same individual — whether living or deceased. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I perform Umrah on behalf of my deceased parents?
Yes. Performing Umrah on behalf of a deceased parent is one of the most beloved acts a child can do. Our scholar makes the Niyyah in your parent’s name and makes personal Dua for them at the Kaaba.

Yes, if the person is permanently ill, elderly, or physically unable to travel to Makkah. It is not permitted for a healthy person who is simply too busy or lacks funds.

Yes. The majority of scholars across all four madhabs permit proxy Umrah based on authentic Hadith. The Prophet ï·º permitted a companion to perform pilgrimage on behalf of his deceased father (Sahih al-Bukhari 1513).
What name is used during the Niyyah?
Before beginning the rituals, our scholar makes the full Niyyah using your loved one’s complete name. Dua is also made mentioning them by name at the Kaaba and during Tawaf.
