What Is Umrah Badal?

Umrah Badal, also called Badal Umrah or proxy Umrah, is an Umrah performed by one Muslim on behalf of another who cannot perform it themselves. “Badal” means substitute in Arabic. It is done for a Muslim who has passed away, or for a living person who is permanently unable to travel because of old age or a lasting illness.

Is Umrah Badal Permissible in Islam?

Yes. The majority of scholars permit Umrah on behalf of a deceased Muslim, or a living Muslim who is permanently unable to perform it.

The clearest evidence is the hadith of Abu Razin. He told the Prophet ﷺ that his father was too old to perform Hajj or Umrah, or to travel. The Prophet ﷺ replied: “Perform Hajj and ‘Umrah on behalf of your father.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i 2621, graded sahih)

In Sahih al-Bukhari 1513, a woman from the tribe of Khath’am asked whether she could perform Hajj for her elderly father, and the Prophet ﷺ said she could. Scholars apply the same principle to Umrah.

Some scholars, particularly in the Maliki school, are more restrictive about proxy worship. If you follow a particular madhab, you may wish to ask your local scholar. Read more rulings in our Islamic FAQ.

Who Can You Book Umrah Badal For?

A Parent or Relative Who Has Passed Away

This is the most common reason families book. No prior consent is needed from the deceased: your intention in arranging it, and the scholar’s intention in their name, are enough.

An Elderly Parent Who Can No Longer Travel

If a parent’s age makes the journey impossible, Umrah Badal can be performed for them with their permission.

Someone with a Permanent Illness or Disability

The inability must be lasting. A temporary illness does not qualify, because the person may still perform Umrah themselves later.

Umrah Badal can be performed more than once for the same person. Many families book it on the anniversary of a death, or during Ramadan through our Umrah Badal in Ramadan service.

Conditions for a Valid Umrah Badal

For a proxy Umrah to be valid, scholars set five conditions. Every scholar who performs Umrah Badal for us meets all of them.

1. The person performing it is an adult Muslim of sound mind.
2. They have already completed their own Umrah.
3. They make the intention for the named person when entering Ihram.
4. Every rite is completed in full: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Halq or Taqsir.
5. For a living person, the inability is genuine and permanent, and they have given permission.

How to Book Umrah Badal

Step 1: Book Online and Give the Name

Complete your booking and enter the full name of the person the Umrah is for, whether they are living or deceased, and any personal dua you would like made. You can request a preferred date, and we confirm it with you.

Step 2: A Scholar Performs the Umrah in Makkah

The scholar enters Ihram at the Miqat with the intention in your loved one’s name, then completes Tawaf, prays two rak’ahs, performs Sa’i and finishes with Halq or Taqsir. He performs one Umrah per name and never combines bookings.

Step 3: Receive Video Proof and Certificate

Within 72 hours of completion, you receive an HD video of the Umrah and a digital certificate with your loved one’s name, by WhatsApp or email.

Umrah Badal, Badal Hajj or Ramadan Umrah?

Umrah Badal can be performed at any time of year and takes a few hours. Badal Hajj is the full Hajj, performed only in Dhul Hijjah, and is most important for someone who died without performing their obligatory Hajj. Umrah Badal in Ramadan is performed during the holy month, when Umrah carries special reward.

Do I need permission to perform Umrah Badal for a deceased parent? No. For someone who has passed away, consent is not required. Your intention and the scholar’s intention in their name are sufficient.
